GRPS expected to announce insurance decision Monday story image
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grand Rapids Public Schools are expected to make an announcement Monday that will save dozens of employees thousands of dollars a year.

The district has decided to treat single parent employees with one child as families for insurance purposes.

Thanks to Public Act 152 of 2011, public employers now have the choice between a hard cap and 80-20 insurance model.

The hard cap places a limit on how much they can contribute to premiums, and for families, that number is around $4,000 than it is for couples.

Until now, the 45 to 50 GRPS employees with one child have been put in the 'couple' category.

The district made this decision after receiving a letter from State Senator Hildenbrand saying treating such employees as families was the legislative intent.
