MATTAWAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Dozens gathered Friday night to honor the memory of a fallen Mattawan firefighter.

22-year-old Nate Fruin died while on his way to battle a house fire in Van Buren County last week.

The Mattawan firefighter was celebrated again, and remembered for his acts of kindness, his smile, and the job that he loved--the job he died doing.

Outside Mattawan High School, more than 50 people lit candles, to celebrate the life of the 22-year-old firefighter.

Many gathered--friends of Nate's younger brother Alex, sharing stories and remembering simple acts of kindness he would do every day.

The firefighter of more than 5 years died on his way to a house fire in Van Buren County. Emergency teams say he went into cardiac arrest.

Earlier this week, more than 1,200 came out to say goodbye at his funeral.

Family and friends wanted Friday to be a night without tears, in honor of the man so many will miss.

The vigil ended with family friends blowing out their candles in unison, and standing in line, singing well wishes to his family.

Nate's family is urging everyone to keep his spirit alive by doing simple acts of kindness, like opening a door for a stranger or buying a cookie for the person behind you.
