KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A suspect is behind bars in the 1993 death of Lois Cox, and Newschannel 3 is digging deeper into how investigators were able to finally procure charges against the suspect.
In October of 1993, 59-year-old Lois Cox, of Kalamazoo, was found shot to death in Three Rivers, and now prosecutors have authorized charges against Grady Shields Jr.
Shields has been a suspect in the murder since at least 2005, but until just recently, police have been unable to link him to the murder.
With a warrant now issued, police say the case is all but closed.
In 1993, police combed the area in Three Rivers where Cox was found dead inside her car.
At the time, police were unable to even come to a timeline.
"As far as we can tell, it was a random crime, violence, wrong place at the wrong time," said Detective Greg Cordes with Kalamazoo Public Safety.
Detective Cordes has been working the case for about a year now, focusing around 20 to 30 hours per week on it.
"The reason we opened this case had nothing to do with a new piece of evidence or anything coming forward--it was just one of those cases that the right thing needed to be done," Cordes said.
He hopes solving this case will bring some peace to Lois Cox's family.
"I think every case can be solved," Cordes said. "You just have to get the right break or look at the info in the right way."
Shields is currently in prison on an unrelated charge.
He is scheduled for arraignment on April 24th.
