KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A trained fighter who took off after police say he brutally beat his girlfriend has returned to Kalamazoo to face a judge.
Police say 41-year-old Arthur Payne put the mother of his child, Stephanie Janssen, in the hospital with a critical head injury, then took off. Payne was arrested Wednesday in Michigan City, Indiana.
On Friday Janssen’s family saw Payne for the first time since the attack.
Janssen’s mother told Newschannel 3 that she was disappointed that Payne was given a $100,000 cash bond because she doesn’t think he should have the chance to be out of jail at all.
Payne is now facing a charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and aggravated domestic violence. If found guilty he could face more than a decade behind bars.
Police say Payne fled after severally beating Janssen in late March in their apartment in Oshtemo Township.
Janssen suffered critical injuries and was found in a pool of blood and broken glass. Her family tells Newschannel 3 that they do expect her to recover.
Janssen’s mother also said that she knows there are many other women out there who are in situations similar to her daughter’s.
“My daughter has a long road to recovery, but I want to bring awareness to the situation of domestic abuse,” said Alice Janssen.
If Payne does post bond, he will be required to wear an electronic monitoring device, he would also not be allowed to have any weapons or to have any contact with the victim.
