PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of a man with ties to Mississippi who died after a grass fire in West Michigan.
The Kent County sheriff's department said in a statement Wednesday that 55-year-old Inez Joseph Tates was found alongside U.S. 131 on Saturday in Kent County's Plainfield Township, located north of Grand Rapids. His rental car was found nearby.
The department says Tates has ties to the Jackson, Miss., area but worked as a truck driver and didn't have a permanent address. According to investigators, Tates isn't believed to have family or friends in West Michigan. Authorities say he may have been picking up a semi-truck.
The department has said foul play isn't suspected. Passing motorists helped put out the flames. Tates died of burns over most of his body.
