BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Shawn Pike, the man police say fatally stabbed a Citgo gas station employee, has been formally charged in court Thursday.

He faces charges of felony murder, habitual offender (3rd offense) and assault with intent to rob while armed. His bond was denied.

30-year-old Shawn Pike is accused of fatally stabbing 27-year-old Nicole Gates.

Police found Gates' body early Wednesday morning at the Citgo in Bedford Township.

Detectives say Gates was just minutes away from closing down when Pike walked in and held the store up.

Investigators say that after killing her, he stole her car.

They arrested Pike hours later.

Longtime friends of Nicole Gates showed up at the last spot where she was seen alive.

"This happened to a mom. This mom is never gonna see her babies anymore. They're never going to have their mom to hold, to love. I'm never gonna be able to say, 'Nikki I love you,'" said Megan Rayborn.

Another man is facing felony charges of being an accessory after the fact. He has been identified as Dustin Hartman. His bond has been set at $25,000.
