Ottaw Co. deputies continue investigating wrong-way crash

Updated: Friday, July 11, 2014

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police in Ottawa County are investigating after a head-on crash killed one person and left another in critical condition.

Deputies say 32-year-old Heather Luke, from Nunica, was driving along I-96 Thursday night when she used the emergency turn-around to then head westbound in the eastbound lanes.

She crashed into a mini-van that burst into flames, killing the other driver, who has been identified as 52-year-old William Foster, of Wyoming.

"She was running all the cars off the road, and right out from the bean field, she put her SUV in the ditch," said witness Suzanne Clum. "She backed out and continued to head west in the eastbound lanes. And my husband was going to the house to get his cellphone and we heard the boom, and then instant black smoke."

Police are still trying to figure out why Luke was going the wrong way.

They say at this point, they are unable to say whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

At last check, she was listed in critical condition after being airlifted from the scene shortly after the crash.
