State election board shoots down minimum wage initiative story image

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A state election board has voted against moving forward with a voter initiative proposal to raise Michigan's minimum wage.

The Board of State Canvassers says advocates fell about 4,000 signatures short of the more than 25,000 needed to put the issue before lawmakers or voters.

The initiative would have increased the minimum wage over time to $10.10 an hour in Michigan.

In May lawmakers passed a smaller minimum wage hike to increase it to $9.25 an hour by 2018.
