WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES

UNTIL 8 PM

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES remain for all of West Michigan for an accumulation of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain and even plain rain.  The ADVISORIES last until 8 PM everywhere save for Berrien, Cass, St. Joe, and Branch counties where the expiration time is 1 PM.  Snowfall ranges from 1" to 3" near and south of I-96 including Kalamazoo.  North of I-96, amounts may be greater in a range from 2" to 4".  Once snow transitions to freezing rain, ice accumulations of 1/10" perhaps upwards of 2/10" are possible.  Plus, secondary and back roads are likely to remain icy even when air temperatures reach the middle 30s this afternoon.  Please be careful traveling!

Board rules minimum wage drive short of signatures

Updated: Friday, July 25, 2014

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan's elections board has voted not to certify a voter-initiated proposal to raise the state's minimum wage.

The Board of State Canvassers ruled 3-1 Thursday that advocates fell 3,900 valid signatures short of 258,000 needed to put the proposed law before lawmakers or a statewide vote. The board's staff initially determined there were enough signatures but reconsidered after a restaurant group opposing the proposal found duplicates.

To head off the ballot drive, lawmakers in May repealed the minimum wage law that would be amended by the proposal and passed a smaller wage hike. The hourly minimum will rise to $9.25 by 2018 with inflationary increases after.

The voter-initiated law would increase the minimum to $10.10 an hour over time with later inflationary increases. Raise Michigan is considering an appeal.
