Updated: Friday, March 1 2013, 08:32 AM EST
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Lawmakers in Washington have renewed a law to protect women's safety.

Congress approved the Violence Against Women Act Thursday and the bill is now on its way to President Obama's desk.

He does plan to sign it.

The law helps provide resources to women so they can escape abusive situations.

This new version of the law will also provide protections for gays, lesbians and transsexuals.
