Steel plant explosion injures at least 10

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An explosion at a southwestern Illinois steel plant has injured nearly a dozen people.

Fire officials say the blast happened shortly after 8:00 a.m. Thursday at American Steel in Granite City, Illinois, just northeast of St. Louis.

At least 10 workers were hurt, three of them critically.

A local fire chief says it appears that gas somehow ignited, although the cause remains under investigation.
