WEST VIRGINIA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Investigators are trying to figure out what led a man to shoot and kill a sheriff in West Virginia.
Police say Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was eating his lunch when a man walked up to his car and shot him point blank in the head.
Investigators say Crum had a reputation for cracking down on drug dealers.
“It blew me away, I couldn't believe it - it broke my heart. The best sheriff Mingo County has ever seen and ever will see probably,” said one resident.
The suspect, who was also shot during the incident, was arrested and taken to the hospital.
This shooting in West Virginia comes on the heels of a Texas district attorney and his wife being shot to death in their home over the weekend.
Another Texas assistant DA was also gunned down a couple months ago.
Investigators suspect a white supremacist prison gang in those murders.
Police are also now searching for two members of a white supremacist gang in connection with the shooting death of Colorado's Prisons Chief.
Tom Clements was gunned down at this home a few weeks ago. Evan Ebel is the man believed to have pulled the trigger.
Now James Lohr and Thomas Guolee's names have also surfaced in the investigation. They are not suspected in Clements' murder, but police believe they are armed and dangerous and are now working to track them down.
