Investigation into fatal Calif. lion attack

Updated: Friday, March 8 2013, 12:01 AM EST
DUNLAP, Calif. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Investigators now say a lion that killed an animal sanctuary intern escaped its cage and mauled the young woman in a cleaning area.

24-year-old Dianna Hanson had been working at a California animal sanctuary with a lion known as Cous-Cous for six months.

The five-and-a-half-year-old African lion was raised by humans and had appeared on several TV shows, never showing any signs of aggression.

Wednesday, though, he went after Hanson.

A coroner says it appears she died quickly, as the lion broke her neck with a paw swipe.

Cous-Cous was shot and killed after the attack.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has joined state investigators looking into Hanson's death.
