Earthquake spawns tsunami

SOLOMON ISLANDS (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A massive 8.0 magnitude quake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands Wednesday morning, triggering a five-foot tsunami.

Right now officials say there are five confirmed fatalities, including a 10 year old boy.

More casualties are expected as rescue crews make their way to more remote villages.

Meantime, people have been piling into their vehicles trying to get away from the shoreline and heading to higher ground just in case.
 
Officials say there have been more than three dozen aftershocks up to magnitude 6.6.
