Chicago to close dozens of schools

CHICAGO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's being called one of the largest mass school shutdowns in history.
Leaders of the Chicago Public Schools system have announced they will close dozens of schools.
A total of 54 schools will be closed.
It's part of the district's plans to address its $1 billion deficit.
District leaders say too many students have been cheated out of resources, and the consolidation process will get them into higher-performing schools.
Many parents, however, aren't buying it.
For weeks, there have been protests from teachers, parents, and community groups.
The Chicago teachers union says closing that many schools would send the district into chaos.
