CYPRUS (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Banks in the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus opened for the first time Thursday after being shut down for nearly two weeks.
Customers stood in long lines to withdraw cash, but were only allowed to take up to $380.
Tight controls are being imposed on transactions to prevent a run on deposits after the government was forced to accept a stringent rescue package from the European Union to avoid bankruptcy.
Those restrictions are expected to be lifted in about a month.
