VA nominee to go before Congress story image

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - President Obama's choice to lead the trouble Veterans Affairs Department will go before Congress Tuesday.

Nominee Robert McDonald's confirmation is expected to be an easy one.

Meanwhile, legislation aimed at improving the department isn't having the same luck.

The Senate approved a bill last month authorizing $35-billion through 2016.

The money would go to building new clinics, hiring doctors and making it easier for veterans who can't get quick appointments with VA doctors to get outside care.

The House passed a similar bill.

But now lawmakers are hesitating, stuck on the price tag.

Many are hoping to reach an agreement before Congress adjourns in August.
