Multiple sources deny responsibility in Malaysia Airline crash

Updated: Thursday, July 17, 2014

KIEV, Ukraine (NEWSCHANNEL 3) -  A Malaysia Airlines plane crashed in eastern Ukraine late Thursday morning, and there are reports that it may have been shot down.

Malaysia Airlines says 295 people were on board the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur

Government forces and pro-Russian separatists who have been fighting in the region both deny involvement in the crash, but the ongoing conflict has made the airspace very dangerous.

Ukraine's security services produced what they said were two intercepted telephone conversations that they said showed rebels were responsible for the crash.

The first call reportedly includes a rebel commander telling a Russian military intelligence officer that rebel forces shot down the plane, but in the second call, two rebel fighters allegedly are claiming that the rocket attack was carried out by a unit of insurgents about 15 miles north of the crash site.

Neither recording has been independently verified.

Reports indicate that the plane appeared to have broken up before impact.

Emergency workers say bodies have been found miles from the crash site, suggesting the plane broke up in mid-air, at it's cruising altitude of 33.000 feet.

A Ukraine government advisor says the jetliner was hit by a missile.

A journalist with the Associated Press was able to count at least 22 bodies at the crash site.
