ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 10-year-old Albuquerque boy woke up to a special call--that police need his help catching a bandit who has been robbing banks throughout the city.

It was all an elaborate scenario, cooked up by the police department and Make-A-Wish New Mexico.

A bandit was terrorizing bank employees, stealing their money, and running, but Andrew Martines would not let the bad guy get away.

The 10-year-old, who has muscular dystrophy, was sworn in on Friday.

The police department says Andrew's wish was protecting people and catching the bad guys pushed him through the ranks.

"He's wanted to do this his whole life, since he was four," Andrew's mom, Tina Martines said. "So, they made it all possible, and we're just really grateful and blessed."

Tina adds that he was so excited he had a hard time sleeping.

She also says she's not sure how she can top the wish for his upcoming birthday gift.
