Van Buren Co. deputy honored as Officer of the Month by national group

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Van Buren County Sheriff's deputy has received a big award from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Deputy Brian Matthews has been selected as it's Officer of the Month, for June 2014.

Matthews is receiving the award after saving the life of another officer.

Deputy Matthews is also an EMT, and responded to a medical call on a Southwest flight in March of last year, on his way back from training in Arizona.

He determined the man was having a stroke, and broke down an oxygen mask to treat him, and told the pilot to land because there is only a small window to administer the medicine.

Matthews has served with the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office for six years, and was recently certified as one of only 50 drug recognition experts in the state.

He will be honored at a special awards ceremony in May of next year, and will be featured on the Memorial Fund's annual calendar.
