Holland couple to be honored for contributions to adoption in West Michigan
HOLLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan couple is being honored for their contributions in adoption.
Sara Blomeling-Deroo and Jamie Blomeling, of Holland, are receiving national recognition as "Angels in Adoption."
The Blomelings have been long-time advocates of child adoption here in West Michigan, and now because of their contributions, they've been nominated for the "Angels in Adoption" award by Michigan U.S. Senator Gary Peters.
Not only do the Blomelings encourage others to adopt children who are in need of a family, but they've also practiced what they preached, by adopting several children of their own--including some with special needs or even with terminal illnesses.
Over the years, the Blomelings have helped raise 13 children, and currently have 7 children they are still raising.
Sara says her advocacy for adoption comes from being adopted herself as a child.
"It's just an incredible chance to continue to advocate for kids who wait for adoption. I myself was an adoptee growing up, and it's a very important part of my story and my drive to make sure that kids have a chance to have a great family like I did," she said.
"They are proof of what a loving home can do and the power of parents when they adopt and how they can transform lives and be a very important part of that child's future," Sen. Peters said.
The Blomelings will spend the next few days in Washington D.C. being honored and recognized.
