First Day Shoe Fund Provides New Shoes for Kalamazoo Kids
Kalamazoo, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - First Day Shoe Fund is handing out new shoes today to kids across Kalamazoo County.
Volunteers for the organization say this new shoe giveaway is about helping kids walk into their first day of school with more self-confidence and a willingness to live a healthy lifestyle.
First Day Shoe Fund is celebrating their tenth anniversary of giving away shoes here in Kalamazoo. It was started by Valerie Denghel back in 2006 as a way of helping kids in the community who may not be able to afford shoes otherwise.
This year, first day shoe fund has gathered hundreds of pairs of shoes from generous donations across the county. And now, they're hoping to give away over 4,300 pairs of shoes throughout the school year.
“The kids are just so happy. They'll put the shoes on, and start running back and forth to see how fast the new shoes made them. You see that big beaming smile, and you know you made that child's day. You're hoping they're going to take that feeling of confidence and happiness forward into the new school year. So it's hard to describe. It's a really terrific feeling,” said John Curran, Executive Director for First Day Shoe Fund.
The shoe give away Tuesday at Maple Street Magnet School goes until 8:00pm, but volunteers say if you're not able to make it, you can always get ahold of them and they will be more than willing to work with you, so that your child can also receive a pair of new shoes.
