U.S. accusing Russia of violating nuclear missile treaty
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The U.S. is now accusing Russia of violating a 1987 Nuclear Missile Treaty.
The Obama administration is calling the breach a quote... "very serious matter."
Without offering too much detail, an official says Russia broke the agreement by testing a new ground-launched cruise missile.
This apparently took place several years ago, but was only made public Monday.
Russian officials say the allegation was investigated, and considers the matter closed.
As if tensions weren't stressed enough, officials say the fighting in Ukraine with Russian separatists is only getting worse.
Local authorities in eastern Ukraine say at least 22 civilians have been killed in one day by shelling.
U.N. monitors say at least 1,129 people have been killed and more than 3,000 others have been wounded since mid-April.
The fighting is so bad rescue crews were forced to abandon site where a Malaysian Airliner was shot down on July 17th.
European Union envoys are expected to decide Tuesday whether to slap Russia with tougher sanctions.
It would include limiting the countries access to capital markets and halting trade in arms and technologies.
