Politicians want federal investigation in chokehold death
NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New York politicians want a federal investigation into a controversial chokehold death.
Earlier this month the city's medical examiner's office confirmed the chokehold a police officer used on Eric Garner killed him.
The examiner listed several health issues, including asthma, as contributing conditions.
The Staten Island District Attorney's Office is heading up the investigation, but six members of New York's Congressional Delegation say that is not enough.
"The family of Eric Garner deserves an independent an impartial investigation. The only way for that to happen is for the department of justice to step in and get involved," said Rep. Hakeem Jeffries.
The lawmakers also say the police tactic of going after small crimes to help stop bigger ones is not working and leading to tragedies like Garner's death.
