Man accused of putting needles in packages of meat

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Prosecutors in Illinois say they have a man in custody accused for putting needles in packages of hamburger, steaks and pork.

"The reality is that this individual was going into a store and he was tampering with products with a needle that could cause harm to people and it was indiscriminate harm," said U.S. Attorney Steve Wigginton.

All the tainted products were at one store in Belleville.

One customer found a needle in her mouth while eating. Another was stabbed in the hand.

It's not known why the suspect may have done it, but right now authorities don't believe there are any other tainted products.
