German artists claim responsibility for whitewashed flags

NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two German artists are claiming responsibility for the white flags that mysteriously appeared on the Brooklyn Bridge last month.

The pair said they removed the bridge's American flags and posted white flags early July 22nd to celebrate public art.

They say July 22nd marks the 145th anniversary of German-born bridge architect John August Roebling's death.

The artists say they will return the flags.

Police are acknowledging the artists' statements but won't say whether investigators had identified them as suspects before they came forward.
