Doctor opened fire on shooting suspect

PENNSYLVANIA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Pennsylvania police say a doctor injured in a deadly hospital shooting, opened fire on the shooting suspect in self-defense.

"It was just chaos and panic, everybody was running and ducking for cover."

Police identified the suspect as 49-year-old Richard Plotts, a psychiatric patient at the Mercy Wellness Center in Darby, Pennsylvania.

Police say he and his case worker were there for an appointment.

While inside, Potts got into an argument with the doctor and drew a handgun. The doctor then drew his.

It's not clear who fired first or what the fight was about.

The doctor suffered a graze wound, the suspect was hit three times in the chest and torso but survived.

The 53-year-old case worker was killed.
