Canceled Pittsburgh wedding leads to charity event

PITTSBURGH (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - When a Pittsburgh-area groom and his bride-to-be called off their wedding just days away, the groom decided he'd still throw a party--especially since the $20,000 reception was already paid off.

But instead of a reception, Phil LaBoon decided he would hold a fundraiser Sunday for Surgicorps International.

It's a Pittsburgh-based charity where doctors go around the world, helping children with cleft palates and severe burns.

"Take whatever you're dealt, and make it the best, if it that's what I did, and I never, in my wildest dreams, thought it would become international news," LaBoon said.

The post-nuptual party-turned philanthropic endeavor got off to a slow start, but Phil says when word of the party hit the news and websites, it was on.

Some guests even donated tens of thousands of dollars.
