GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (SINCLAIR BROADCAST GROUP) - West Michigan said goodbye to former Congressman Vern Ehlers Thursday.

Ehlers represented West Michigan for more than 16 years in Congress.

He died earlier this week at the age of 83.

Congressman Ehlers touched the lives of thousands of people with his public service and as a teacher.

As Michigan looks back at Ehlers's life, the people who knew him best described him as authentic and principled.

The ceremony at Eastern Avenue Christian Reformed Church was packed with people recalling the life and legacy of the political titan.

Everyone there remembered Ehlers's positive presence and his past dedication to public service in Kent County, in our State Capitol, and in our nation’s Capitol.

Ehlers wore many hats: research physicist, Kent County Commissioner, State Lawmaker, Congressman, and teacher.

On the the day he died, the hat the 83-year-old wore was father and husband of 59 years.

To honor the life of one of the most beloved Congressmen in Michigan, Ehlers friends and family celebrated his Christian faith, which they say flowed like a river.

Humble, compassionate, and committed to doing good, his colleagues in politics remember his silent, humble leadership.

A moment of stories, prayer, and song, the touching tribute was a fitting final goodbye for a man committed to his calling and his life motto: leave it better than you found it.
