YWCA looking for volunteers to comfort sexual abuse survivors
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The YWCA in Kalamazoo is looking for help comforting sexual assault survivors.
They need volunteers to sit with men, women and children who have been sexually assaulted and comfort them through the process of the examination.
Volunteers are on call day and night for three shifts a month.
Those at the YWCA tell us they are looking for supportive and empathetic people to sit with victims and survivors, hold their hands and listen.
"It allows our survivors to get the response that they deserve and that is which is support and being believed. And that's not always there for them," said Mallory Kruizenga, a YWCA victim’s advocate counselor.
In order to become a volunteer you have to first apply at the YWCA and then go through training.
There is training coming up on October 7th and 8th.
So those interested are asked to apply as soon as possible.

The YWCA is the only place in Kalamazoo that provides the sexual assault nurse exams.
If there isn't also a medical emergency, they do the exams at their own building, to provide a more comforting space. And the volunteers help make it even more comforting for those who have survived an assault.
