W. Mich. petting zoo accused of animal neglect
COLOMA, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan petting zoo is accused of animal neglect and now faces a complaint from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
According to the complaint, Deer Forest Amusements in Coloma violated the Animal Welfare Act multiple times since May of 2011.
Allegations include failing to maintain a program of adequate veterinary care and not giving the deer proper shelter from the weather.
In the spring of 2013, the USDA removed nearly 140 deer from the property, saying the animals were malnourished.
The park is now under new management, which is trying to turn Deer Forest into an exotic animal sanctuary.
THe complaint only names Deer Park, and not specific people.
