The 20th Annual Roof Sit kicks off Thursday with big goals for a big anniversary

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Up on the rooftop -- West Michigan volunteers are supporting local children in need!

The 20th Annual Roof Sit kicks off Thursday in Portage.

The fundraiser for the Community Healing Centers raises money to help treat and prevent child abuse and neglect.

For the next three days, 103.3 WKFR hosts Dana Marshall and Heather McGregor will be up on the roof of Helzberg Diamonds at Westnedge and Milham.

The Community Healing Centers hopes to raise $100,000 this year, a big goal for the 20th anniversary. The funds will go toward helping children who have been sexually or physically abused, or experienced trauma. Organizers said they offer their services for free for families to make sure every child gets the care they need.

"We've been doing this for 20 years and we're sure not going to stop now. The more children we can help the better off our community will be," said Sally Reames, the executive director of Community Healing Centers.

Volunteers will collect donations at the Roof Sit site, local Shell gas stations, schools and businesses around Kalamazoo County.

There will be a kick-off dinner Thursday night from 6-8 p.m. at the Roof Sit site, hosted by Newschannel 3's Andy Dominianni. Tickets are still available here.

Friday morning, Jessica Wheeler will be live up on the roof to get a closer look. You can catch her from 4:30-7 a.m. on Newschannel 3.
