Suspect jailed after alleged kidnapping, sexual assault

Dontrel Williams is currently in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A suspect is in jail following a terrifying child abduction in Kalamazoo Wednesday night.

39-year-old Dontrel Williams is in jail right now, booked on first degree criminal sexual conduct charges.

Police say they received a 9-1-1 call from the teen, who was in a closet.

The girl told police she was standing near a Kalamazoo bus stop in the 1600 block of Portage Street, around 7:45 Wednesday night, when a man forced her into his car, drove her to his house, and sexually assaulted her.

The address--in the 1600 block of Clinton Avenue--comes back to 39-year-old Dontrel Williams, who is currently in jail on kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct charges.

Police say the suspect did not know the victim on a personal level but had likely seen her around town and at school.

They tell us the teen was inside the house for nearly an hour, when she got an unexpected opportunity to call for help.

"His wife came home unexpectedly, and he went downstairs and the young lady was put in a closet, where she called 911," said Captain Victor Ledbetter, with KDPS. "That was quick thinking on her behalf and that's why we have a positive outcome."

We did a background check on Williams, and found he has not served any prison time in Michigan, but about 15 years ago, he faced minor assault and retail fraud charges here in Kalamazoo.

Newschannel 3 will be on-hand for the arraignment in the case, and we'll keep you updated.
