The United Way in St. Joseph County surpassed its 2018 fundraising goal, putting the agency in the seven-digit club.

Executive Director Kelly Hostetler said the goal for the year was more than $900,000. On Tuesday, the agency announced that it had shattered that goal.

"The community deserves a huge, standing ovation for this,” Hostetler said. “We raised $1,035,000.”

In St. Joseph County, the United Way serves 41 organizations meeting a variety of needs. Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite said the United Way has a huge impact with the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, helping with victim’s services and dive rescue programs.

“It’s changed lives,” Lillywhite said. “It’s saved lives, and it’s changed lives.”

Hostetler said breaking the seven-digit mark was unbelievable.

"It's only been a dream for us. We are thrilled to hit that number and say we hit that number,” Hostetler said. “It's unbelievable. It's humbling. It's exciting. It's just amazing what the people in this county have done for our organization and for each other."

The United Way thanked all of its sponsors for contributing to the fundraising. Organizers said the biggest contributor was Morgan Olsan who donated more than $125,000.
