Security cam footage shows shooting that critically injured Kalamazoo man
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Security camera footage shows the shooting that critically injured a 25-year-old man in Kalamazoo early Sunday morning.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety released the video to Newschannel 3 Monday, in hopes the footage will compel anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
The video shows nearly a dozen people in the parking lot on the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Drive at the time of the shooting but so far, few witnesses have shared details with police.
Investigators say 30-40 minutes before the shooting there several people were involved fight that went unreported—police were not called until after the man was shot around 4 a.m. Sunday.
The head of criminal investigations at KDPS, Cpt. Shannon Bagley said, “Right now we are trying to figure out exactly why and what caused that originating altercation.”
Police believe someone involved in that earlier altercation called friends over to Fox Ridge Apartments for reinforcement.
The video shows a white car, believed to be a Toyota Corolla, pull into the parking lot just before 4 a.m. Sunday.
Four people exit the white car and they are joined by a few others on foot. The group walks toward a vehicle parked in the lot, which can be seen in the top right corner of the video.
Investigators say the victim and one other person are still seated inside that vehicle when the assault begins.
After the fight spills into the parking lot, the video then shows several people suddenly duck down.
“You see people scatter, apparently that's when the gun shot took place. However, you still see an assault taking place,” Cpt. Bagley said,
The 25-year-old was shot in the abdomen and remains in critical condition, unable to talk to police.
Investigators urge anyone with information about the shooting or the white car seen in the video to
to call KDPSat (269) 337-8994 or Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100.
