Portage doctor to be sentenced in embezzlement case
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The former Portage podiatrist convicted of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from an elderly patient is expected to learn her punishment Tuesday.
Dr. Regina Spears-Everett was recently convicted of using credit cards and taking money from 91-year-old Toni Verdreies, who died in 2011.
Spears-Everett treated Verdries, who was homebound and lived alone.
According to court documents, in 2010, Spears-Everett helped Verdries turn over power of attorney, and also sign a new will leaving her all Verdries assets.
Court records also say Spears-Everett maxed out Verdries' credit cards, spending more than $100,000.
Spears-Everett faces up to 15 to 25 months in prison.
