Officials to burn islands to stop invasive species

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - State officials are planning a series of fires on two islands in the Grand River in Ottawa County.

They are trying to get rid of an invasive plant called phragmites.

Biologists say the plant competes with native vegetation, and doesn't have a significant value for wildlife.

The coverage area will include 15 sites, some as large as two acres.

The burns will be later this summer or early in the fall.
