NILES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The Berrien County Sheriff's Department has announced that a suspect is being held in the Berrien County Jail on a homicide charge stemming from an incident Sunday evening in Niles.

John Benton Lewis has been arrested on a homicide charge in the case, and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday evening, police were called to the 1400 block of Lawndale Avenue in Niles.

Police said the homeowner John Lewis told police he and his wife, Carla, found two men in their basement, and the suspects fired a shot, hitting Carla.

John was later arrested on a marijuana violation.

Police are still looking for their car, a 2008 Mazda CX9 wagon-SUV with a Michigan license plate, CMY-3721. It is a black or blue colored car.
