Niles man charged with homicide in wife's shooting death
NILES, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The Berrien County Sheriff's Department has announced that a suspect is being held in the Berrien County Jail on a homicide charge stemming from an incident Sunday evening in Niles.
John Benton Lewis has been arrested on a homicide charge in the case, and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
Just before 6 p.m. Sunday evening, police were called to the 1400 block of Lawndale Avenue in Niles.
Police said the homeowner John Lewis told police he and his wife, Carla, found two men in their basement, and the suspects fired a shot, hitting Carla.
She was given first aid, but died at the scene. John was not injured, and told police the suspects ran from the house stealing their car.
John was later arrested on a marijuana violation.
On Tuesday afternoon, Berrien County deputies announced that John was being charged with homicide in connection with the shooting death of his wife.
Police are still looking for their car, a 2008 Mazda CX9 wagon-SUV with a Michigan license plate, CMY-3721. It is a black or blue colored car.
