New Mattawan Later Elementary School building hosts open house

MATTAWAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new state-of-the-art school is celebrating its grand opening right now.

Mattawan schools designed a new later elementary school building that is unlike anything else in the district.

District leaders say this new building accommodates the 21st century learning needs of both students and staff.

The new design does away with the traditional classrooms and lockers and instead features open learning spaces that encourage interaction.

The building has three different wings for each grade level.

Multiple classes can gather together in front of a flat screen for group work; there's stations for individual work; and cozy reading nooks.

The building also utilizes natural light. There are an abundance of windows because natural light is said to have positive health effects and aid in learning.

"The colors are bright. They're cheerful. They're calming, and you look up and you feel like there's so much natural light coming in," said 4th grade teacher Tracie Osborn.

"There's a tolerance and an acceptance of moving around a bit, and that absolutely decreases behavioral issues, because they no longer have to stay sit still sit still," said Mattawan Superintendent Dr. Robin Buchler. "Because furniture is designed for movement."

An official ribbon cutting for the building was held just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, and the open house for parents and students will continue until 7 p.m.
