One dead after gunfire reported, police respond to Pavilion Estates community

UPDATE at 2:15 p.m. -- Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken has confirmed the suspect involved in the shooting at Pavilion Estates this afternoon has died.

UPDATE at 1:45 p.m. -- Newschannel 3's Jake Berent has confirmed the suspect has been shot and was taken away in an ambulance after multiple shots were fired.

Gunfire has erupted in the Pavilion Estates community on Kingsville Road in Kalamazoo County.

Multiple police units, including Michigan State Police and SWAT units, have responded to the incident, where a man is in possession of a weapon, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff James VanDyken said.

Police were called after a man was seen hanging out the door of a van with a gun in his hand.

Newschannel 3's Jake Berent is on the scene, and has reported that one shot was fired initially, followed by a barrage of gunfire heard in the area. Out of the near 40 officers at the scene, at least a dozen have their guns drawn.

The suspect also was heard arguing with officers, and asking to be shot by police.

The Kalamazoo Sheriff's Office, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Western Michigan University and Portage police also are on the scene.

Newschannel 3 is on the scene and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
