Mom searching for lost necklace containing son's ashes
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan mother is asking for help finding two pieces of jewelry she says have significant sentimental value to her family.
Amanda Shears likes to keep her children close.
She watches over her three-year-old son. Wynn, and remembers her baby, Zealen, who would have been five this year.
"We ended up there fighting for six weeks. We thought it could even be a year because we wanted to get him strong enough to go on the heart transplant list. And it just ended up being he couldn't fight anymore," said Shears.
Shears and her husband lost their child in Ann Arbor several years ago due to heart complications. She was devastated, but a small gift from a relative helped her through: a charm necklace with her son's ashes inside.
That necklace, along with an engagement ring from her husband of 13 years, disappeared after a surgery Shears had earlier this month at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo
"So it's kind of like losing him over again, a little piece that's missing," said Shears.
For weeks she has frantically searched every bag, piece of clothing and place she visited before and after the surgery.
"Normally you don't think 'let's bring jewelry to a surgery.' It's just that stuff was so special i just couldn't imagine not having it with me," said Shears.
She fears the worst; that she may never see it again.
"It would mean a lot to us to be able to get it back," said Shears. "It's not valuable to anybody else, it's just something that really means everything to my family."
Bronson Hospital says it does have a lost and found report from Amanda Shears and is keeping an eye out for her items.
Shears says it's also possible the jewlery might have been stolen from her car in Niles where she lives.
