Mattawan's MPI Research bought out by one of state's largest life science companies
MATTAWAN, Mich. —
Charles River Labs has announced it will be acquiring Mattawan-based MPI Research, a contract research firm, for a cash transaction of $800 million.
This is the second contract research organization (CRO) obtained by the Wilmington-based laboratory following a $20 million purchase of U.K.-based KWS BioTest, which focuses on discovery testing for drugs targeting cancer. CROs like MPI Research, who focuses specifically to biopharma and medical device firms, do not develop their own drugs, but pay drug developers to run trials, and the purchase aims to advance the consolidation in the CRO sector.
The deal is expected to close in the early second quarter of 2018. A spokesperson from Charles River did not comment on whether layoffs would result from the deal.
