KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Crews were working on hot spots after a massive fire destroyed a home Thursday morning in Kalamazoo.
Flames were reported shooting out of the roof of home on Woodward around 6am.
Crews on scene say everyone got out safely. The home is divided into eight apartment units.
Firefighters were also told to exit the structure as they were battling the fire because it was too dangerous to stay inside.
The road at W. Kalamazoo has been shut down, it is a one-way street so you will have to seek an alternate route.
Crews say they will be on scene for several hours, so avoid the area if possible.
A cause for the fire has not been determined. A man who lives on the top floor said that he saw smoke coming from his balcony and went to put it out, but there was too much. He alerted neighbors and called 911.
Fire crews say that the fire was tough to fight because of the way the building was divided.
Red Cross is helping the people that were displaced by the fire.
