Man shot by Portage Police to be sentenced Monday
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A man shot by Portage Police last year after he attacked and stabbed his girlfriend is expected to be sentenced Monday.
In June, 33-year-old Michael Van Mackins was found guilty of four felonies, including restraining a person with a weapon, and assault.
Police say on December 17, 2013, Mackins stabbed a woman in her face while in a car at the corner of Romence Road and Constitution Boulevard.
He then took off running.
He was found by officers at Crossroads Village Apartments.
To stop the threat, an officer says he had to shoot Mackins.
He is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
