Man accused of sexually assaulting eight-year-old girl
CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A habitual offender is behind bars, accused of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl in Calhoun County.
Ricky Dix was arraigned on Wednesday. His ex-girlfriend tells Newschannel 3 that Dix sexually assaulted her daughter about a month ago, two weeks after moving into their home.
Dix was previously convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in 2000.
"I'm glad he's off the streets and he can't do this to any more little girls," said the victim's mother, "because my baby is so precious to me."
The Kalamazoo YWCA's Children's Center says that one in ten Americans will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18 and most of that abuse happens within the home.
The center says that regression in a child's behavior or acting out could be signs of abuse. They suggest using books as a way to talk to children about such hard topics.
"It's never too early to start learning about good touches and bad touches," said Nichole Westrate, Director of the Children's Center, "healthy relationships and family and just being a good friend and what that means."
Anyone who believes they know a child is being abused is urged to call Child Protective Services.
