Local teacher last seen one month ago in Portage
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A local teacher has been missing for one month and her disappearance is being investigated by police as a possible murder.
Theresa Lockhart was last seen in public leaving a yoga class at her gym in Portage on May 18 and since that time her disappearance has been investigated as a possible murder, with her husband, Chris Lockhart, labeled a person of interest.
Newschannel 3's Mike Krafcik takes a look back at the last month in the investigation.
No arrests have been made and police have no apparent signs that Teresa Lockhart is alive. However, the investigation is on-going and police haven't said much on the matter.
May 20: Theresa Lockhart was reported missing from Schoolcraft community schools, where Lockhart works as a high school Spanish teacher.
Schoolcraft Superintendent Rusty Stitt said, “That kind of was the red flag.”
Later that day, police found Lockhart’s car at a carpool lot, just miles from her home in Portage.
May 21: Portage police spoke with Chris Lockhart who said his wife went away, but said he didn't know where she was.
June 1: Christopher Lockhart did not show up for a prayer vigil held for Theresa at her former church.
Velma Duive, friend, said, “Something is wrong. This is not Theresa, it might be a thousand other people, but it is not Theresa.”
June 2: Portage police name Chris a person of interest and the case shifts from a disappearance to a possible murder investigation.
June 7 and 8: Police served a warrant and searched the Lockhart’s home for 30 hours straight. The following-day. The search stopped. Police said they found nothing.
Since June 9 there appears to be no signs of developments in the investigation.
Joan Mullowney, Theresa’s sister, said, “It's a hard to keep positive after 30 days.”
Mullowney said she is trying to remain hopeful, but says it's becoming harder each day and when asked about the uncertainty she said, “I would have thought it be a lot quicker. The not knowing part is the hardest.”
