List released of most stolen car models

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - U.S. experts say when it comes to stolen cars, thieves are actually going after older models, rather than brand new ones.

Federal officials say thieves are then taking them to chop shops where they can be dissected and sold for parts.

Law enforcement experts say newer models have also become harder for thieves to hot wire and drive away.

The most stolen cars from last year, according to the National Insurance Crime Board, are the Honda Accord, the Honda Civic and the Chevrolet Silverado.
Police urge car owners to keep cars locked up and parked in well-lit, well-travelled areas.

You can also take extra precautions such as a steering-wheel lock or install an ignition kill switch.

Police say even etching the vehicles VIN number somewhere visible can make it harder for thieves to take them to chop shops.
