Lawsuit filed against Coldwater Police after video released of woman slammed in handcuffs
COLDWATER, Mich. —
The city of Coldwater is responding to a lawsuit after alleging that a now former police officer slammed a handcuffed woman to the ground.
A video appears to show former Coldwater Police Officer Lewis Eastmead grabbing a woman and throwing her to the floor during an arrest at the Branch County Jail.
Eastmead no longer works at the department.
The woman shown in the video has filed a lawsuit against Eastmead, the Coldwater Police Department and four other officers.
An attorney representing the city and the four officers, but not Eastmead, says the officers named in the lawsuit did not have the change to intervene and stop him.
The attorney also claims the city of Coldwater is immune from being sued for punitive damages.
The plaintiff's attorney issued a response on Thursday, saying the city and the officers are liable for trying to cover it up.
