Lawson Arena, Gabel Natatorium damaged after water main break

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Crews are working to repair Lawson Ice Arena and Gabel Natatorium after a water main break last week.

According to Western Michigan University Executive Director of Uiversity Relations Cheryl Roland, a water main burst early Sunday morning, flooding the basement of the building with as much as five feet of water.

Roland says facilities crews responded immediately, working past midnight on Monday to clean up the water. The building was closed through Wednesday.

Roland says equipment for making ice in Lawson Arena was damaged, but it should be fixed in time for the hockey season. An elevator was also damaged.

She says the pool requires substantial repairs that may take the entire semester.
