Late night Decatur crash kills 25-year-old Indiana mother, sends 2-month-old to hospital
DECATUR, Mich. —
UPDATE: The 25-year-old from Elkhart, Indiana has been identified as Daria Malaga.
According to Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, the 2-month-old son of Malaga's is currently in critical condition.
The second driver, a 42-year-old woman from Battle Creek, is listed in good condition.
A 25-year-old mother from Elkhart, Indiana is dead while her 2-month-old son remains in critical condition at a local hospital after a late night collision on M-51 near 89th Avenue in Decatur late Friday evening.
Police say a 42-year-old Battle Creek woman driving a Jeep Wrangler failed to correct for the curve while going northbound on M-51 and overshot, driving into the southbound lane and causing a head on collision with the Chrysler Pacifica driven by the 25-year-old Elkhart, Indiana woman.
The 2-month-old, along with the 42-year-old via helicopter, were sent to a local hospital. The infant remains in critical condition while the 42-year-old is listed as stable. Proper seat restraints were being used for the infant.
A sergeant with the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department said their preliminary investigation did indicate that the driver of the Jeep may have been under the influence of alcohol, but their investigation is currently being concluded.
Decatur Police Department, Cass County Sheriff's Office, Pride Care Ambulance, Decatur-Hamilton Fire Department and West Michigan Air Care all assisted on scene.
